Whitney Legally Blonde Musical
Pilar, cheeky and sensible, completes the Delta Nu girl sister trio, who also form the Greek chorus that performs during the musical. DeQuina Moore was the first to play the role on Broadway before Asmeret Ghebremichael took the role. In the UK, Pilar was played by Ibinabo Jack and Micha Richardson. Brooke is a fitness queen and workout video star accused of murdering her billionaire husband. As a former sister Delta Nu, she is determined to help him and clear her name. Nikki Snelson reprised the role in the musical, while Aoife Mulholland, Hannah Grover and Helen Petrovna played the role in the British productions. Serena is an energetic cheerleader who is a member of sister house Delta Nu. With Margot and Pilar, she is part of the Greek choir that accompanies Elle`s journey through musicals. The role was played by Leslie Kritzer, Susan McFadden and Rachel Grundy. During the development phase of the musical, a demo recording of twelve songs featuring Kerry Butler and others under the name Elle was released. The demo included workbench versions of “There! Right there! ” (called on the sampler “Gay or European”), “Blood in the Water”, “Omigod You Guys”, “Serious”, “What You Want”, “Legally Blonde”, “Legally Blonde Remix”, “So Much Better”, “Take It Like a Man”, in addition to two songs that were not present in the final version of the show, “Beacon of Positivity” (which became “Love and War” for the previews and finally “Positive” for the final version of the show), and “Good Boy”, a song instead of “Ireland”.
The show also received negative reviews. Tim Walker wrote in the Sunday Telegraph: “This is a big, empty ship from a series that makes a lot of noise and wouldn`t have been called `irredeemably bland` otherwise. I was aware that for the two hours and 25 minutes he ran, I was sitting in the middle of a group of people, with a blank smile on faces that otherwise seemed completely numb. This is what I looked like. This is the expression that registers when what you see doesn`t quite match what`s going on in the brain. Quentin Letts wrote for the Daily Mail: “It`s pink, not just in the colour of many clothes and stage effects. It is pink to the heart of its small, tiny soul. The plot is pap, the musical unforgettable, the dance often violent except for a routine with jump ropes. The delighted girls of UCLA`s Delta Nu sorority, led by Margot, Serena and Pilar, celebrate Warner Huntington III`s expected engagement that night to its cheeky, sweet, surprisingly blonde nurse president, Elle Woods, who is worried about finding the perfect dress for the occasion (“Omigod You Guys”). After acquiring her dream dress, Elle goes to dinner with Warner, where he tells her that he needs someone more serious and breaks up with her. She is devastated and sulks for twelve days (“Daughter Of Delta Nu”), but decides to sue Warner at Harvard Law School to show him that she is serious.
With the help of Kate, Delta Nu`s sister, she studies for LSAT. Instead of writing a personal essay, she burst into Harvard`s admissions offices, aided by a group of cheerleaders. She is accepted after revealing that she is motivated by love (“What You Want”). But during her time at Harvard Law, she proved that stereotypes about “dumb blondes” were far from true and broadened her horizons, both intellectually and romantically. The musical was recorded in September 2007 and aired on MTV in October 2007. Following this, a reality show aired that showed the audition for the next person, who played Elle Woods on Broadway. The winner was Bailey Hanks, who starred from July 23, 2008 until the end of production on October 19, 2008. The finalist, Autumn Hurlbert, was Hanks` understudy.
During its broadcast in San Francisco, the musical included a song called “Love and War” instead of what is now “Positive.” Another predecessor of “Positive” was “Beacon of Positivity”. During the workshop phase of the musical, the song “Good Boy” existed in what would later become “Ireland” in the musical. In the song, Paulette and Elle connect on the idea that men are like dogs and should therefore be treated as such. Professor Callahan is the villainous and devious law professor at Harvard Law School. He regularly humiliates, objectifies and tortures his students, especially Elle – and humiliates her in front of the whole class. In the musical, he sings the song “Blood in the Water” and tells his students how ruthless and callous they must be to advance in the legal profession. Michael Rupert was the first to play the role on Broadway, following in Victor Garber`s footsteps in the 2001 film. Professor Callahan has been played by Peter Davison, Matthew Kelly, Les Dennis and Bill Ward in the West End and subsequent UK tours. This musical is relatively new to the world of theatre and caters to today`s generation and culture. With great roles, numerous ensemble characters, and several great song and dance numbers, Legally Blonde is perfect for a large cast with theatrical experience on every level. The musical received mixed reviews, but was hailed as a fun and upbeat production. Ben Brantley, who reviewed the musical in the New York Times, wrote that the show was an “energetic, empty and expensive hymn to the glory of femininity”; He praised Laura Bell Bundy, saying, “She sings and dances perfectly, and she delivers silly lines as if she meant them.” Clive Barnes wrote in his review in the New York Post that he loved the “bubbly and radiant Bundy” as well as others in the cast, and that the “dances certainly have a smooth, crackling, pop snapshot.” Elysa Gardner wrote in USA Today that the musical is a “flattering trifle” and that “the cast ensures that events, no matter how condescending, are not irritating.” Jeremy McCarter lamented in New York Magazine that the musical “does not evoke memories of Tracy Flick, the student council fighter who played Reese Witherspoon in Election before starring in Legally Blonde,” and wrote that the “manic urge” in Witherspoon`s performance Legally Blonde was her favorite part of the film.
In the week ending June 2, 2007, the Broadway production reached a milestone, joining the Millionaires` Club for Weekly Broadway Revenue in $1,003,282. The musical was filmed on September 18, 2007 in front of a live audience for television, as well as on two other dates when it was filmed without an audience. All three edited performances aired on MTV on October 13 and 14, 2007, with additional airing dates on November 3 and 14, 2007. MTV`s involvement in the musical continued with a reality show called Legally Blonde: The Musical – The Search for Elle Woods, which aimed to hire the next actress to play Elle Woods on Broadway and replace Laura Bell Bundy.
