Kinna-Aweya Legal Clinic
The provincial government has cut funding to Legal Aid Ontario by 35 per cent, resulting in funding cuts to many municipal legal clinics. These cuts have had a direct impact on front-line services and clinics serving Ontario`s most vulnerable. There were six 1L and one 3L volunteers, as well as clinic staff from both clinics. It took place on 3 March 2017 in Anishnawbe-Mushkiki. Recently, Lakehead University Community Legal Services partnered with Kinna-aweya Legal Clinic to host an ID clinic. The need for an identity card is a major problem for many people living in poverty. Many services such as housing, banks, food banks, income support, tax benefits, education, employment, elections, and community support and services are not accessible without identification. For example, we have helped many community members apply for ID, and our clinic processes and monitors requests on behalf of these individuals.
